Musical confluence are the flavour of the season these these days. While you could find fusion and musical soirees like east meets west, this one held in city recently was perhaps the first of its kind. Held at Punjab kala Bhawan, sector 16, recently, Punjabi folk performers shared stage with western classical musicians from the group, Singco, a choir group from Texas, USA.

The Punjabi folk groups comprised Meer Des Raj Lachkani, a groups Sufi-Dhadi singers, Darshan Singh and Party, Been-Baja Musician group and group and dancers and Jogi Kashinath. Wind instruments, flute and snake charmer been, etc, were all part of ths melange that enthralled the audience with their perfomances.

The Choir group comprised Army Aquino,Justin Jones,Jacob Walker,Alex Lach and Gurkaran Singh young students in the age group of 16-18 years from Houston, Texas. They performed a variety of music from their repertoire, spanning from opera to a-cappela renditions of contemporary songs. A-cappela music is a relatively uncommon genre in India and involves singing without accompaniment.

Among other recognitions the performers have been selected to the texas (TPSMEA) All-State choir multiple times.

This evening of unique sounds, left the city audiences thrilled to bits.

UT administration is taking the fight against thorny weeds in Sukhna Lake seriously after having been unsuccessful many times. It has launched a Rs 50-lakh project to remove all weeds from the water body and engaged a team from Jaipur, which cleaned up Dal Lake in Srinagar and another in Udaipur, Rajasthan.

A senior official said there were 30-35 experts in the group handling the project. “They have engaged 25 boats to complete the job. So far, they have cleared nearly 52 acres of the lake,” said the official.

Thorny weeds had been robbing the lake of its beauty and making the experience of going there less attractive.

”The administration has been unable to deal with the problem of silt in the lake. Weeds were also making it difficult to go boating there. They had the potential to cause accidents, making boating extremely unsafe,” added the official. Another major threat that weeds presented was to the aquatic life of the lake as they limited the amount of nutrition available in the water. That led to many fish dying.

CHANDIGARH : From his troubled days, when he fought the allegation of a chucker, to his marriage and then on the most glorious day of his life when he completed 800 wickets, there was a close friend from the city who saw it all.

Mandeep Singh Dhillon, head of the department of orthopaedics and physiotherapy at PGIMER and former consultant to the Sri Lankan cricket team, has seen virtually every up and down in spin legend Muttiah Muralitharan’s life.

The doctor, who was instrumental in treating Murali’s shoulder problem when he had to suffer allegations of chucking, was present at his wedding in 2005 and dined with him a day before he reached the 800-wicket mark and retired from Test cricket.

After moving to Apollo Hospital in Colombo in January 2003, Dhillon was a sports injury consultant, when he came in touch with Murali. Talking to TOI from Colombo, Dhillon said: “I had mixed feelings while watching the last Test match at Galle. On one hand it was my country playing and on the other, it was my friend’s moment of glory.”

Dhillon is one of the close friends who were invited by Murali to witness his farewell Test from July 18 to 22 at the Galle International stadium. An invite on behalf of the spin wizard mentioned: “He wanted me to convey his gratitude for your unwavering support over the years which no doubt enabled him to achieve such landmark world records.”

A special brace had to be designed for Murali as the usual available ones did not fit his elbow. “Murali gets extra movement at his shoulder arm and also at his wrist, which gave an impression that he chucks the bowl. And this extra movement has been since his birth. A special brace was made for him,” said the doctor. The world’s leading Test wicket-taker had been practicing his action with a brace designed in 2003 by this PGI specialist.

Immediately after his win, Murali told his doctor friend that what matters to him is Sri Lanka’s victory and not his record. “He is a down-to-earth person and very sincere. He has been in touch with me ever since I fitted the brace and attempted to get him out of the chucking controversy,” added Dhillon.
